stress-proof escape

when attaching an escape-mask any mistake will kill you.

any mistake will kill you.
I ensured you won't make any.

WHAT FILTER MASKS ARE
‍‍
Escape Filter Masks are the smallest kind of gas masks on the market, they are carried by workers in the petrol-chemical industries and in laboratories to be used in case of an emergency.
Less than 1% of these masks are ever used but they are carried everyday.

THE PROBLEM
users have to hold their breath until the mask is fully attached and some users fail to attach it in time. Even with good training, the danger is still stress-related mistakes.

ADDITIONAL CHALLENGES
both Parat masks are hard to unpack and handle with workers gloves.
Parat 3100: Snorkel Masks may dangle and fall out, when the wearer is moving or in panic.
Parat 3200: Half Masks can not be used with facial hair and no geometry fits every human face.

MY SOLUTION
since Snorkel Masks are the only masks that will fit anyone, my mask also uses a snorkel –but with my Design the two filter volumes are strapped to the wearers cheeks so their weight need not be held by the wearers teeth and nothing could dangle or fall out.
The flexible connection between mouthpiece and filters yields a comfortable position on any face.
Attaching the Parat 3150 mask takes less than 3 seconds to be safe, because the mask is kept in an easy access holster where the nose clip attaches automatically when the snorkel is put into the mouth. The user is safe to breathe even before the back-buckle is closed.
Active parts like back buckle & nose clip are enlarged so they can be adjusted quickly, even when in panic and wearing thick welding-mittens.

SHORT ESCAPE
tutored by Prof. Nils Krüger
supported by Dräger Safety Division

Dräger challenged the class to improve upon their two Escape Filter Masks Parat 3100 snorkel mask and Parat 3200 half mask but utilize a smaller filter volume to make for  even compacter masks.

Prof. Nils Krüger made us focus on user research and user testing. I took it to the extreme by validating every design decision I made by testing and iterating until I was sure it would work on the first try.
